Pope Francis on Tombs Of Shepherd Children

Pope Francis has prayed before the tombs of Shepherd children Francisco and Jacinta who he will make saints today.

Tens of thousands of worshippers greeted Pope Francis on Friday when he arrived at the central Portuguese town of Fatima on Friday.

The pope is on a two-day visit to commemorate the first centenary of the apparition of the Madonna here.

Up to a million people are believed to be present at the canonisation ceremony.
Francisco Marto and his sister Jacinta are believed by Catholics to have seen apparitions of the Madonna 100 years ago.

The Catholic Church posthumously confers sainthood on people considered so holy during their lives that they are now believed to be with God and can intercede with him to perform miracles.

Portugal has taken a number of security measures for the high-profile visit, including reinstating border controls and placing special cement blocks in the open space around Fatima.

The move was part of efforts to prevent attacks with vehicles, as seen in Stockholm and Nice.

For a country where 81 percent of the population describe themselves as belonging to the faith, the threat hasn’t put a dampener on events.
