The acclaimed most security-conscious governor in Nigeria, Chief Willie Obiano has described as false, the rumours making the rounds in the social media that a trailer-load of arms ordered by Muslims arrived the state earlier this week.
Gov Obiano who spoke at the Basilica of Saint Andrew, Onitsha during the 50th Birthday Anniversary celebration of the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, Right Rev Owen Nwokolo, urged the people to discountenance the rumour, noting that security remains topmost in his agenda.
According to the rumours, the trailer that brought the alleged arms concealed under tomato baskets and yams it brought from the Northern part of the country, had arrived Odukwe Street near Nwanyi-Imo junction, Otolo Nnewi,Thursday evening.
The Governor, while debunking the rumour, said on getting the news immediately ordered a 100-man crackteam from the State Security paraphernalia to invade and thoroughly search the entire area, after which it was confirmed that no single arm arrived the area.
He revealed that 100 well-trained security personnel have been deployed as intelligence officers to Onitsha, Obosi, Nkpor and Umuoji in a renewed effort to rid the areas of criminals.
Congratulating Bishop Nwokolo on his birthday, Gov Obiano prayed God to grant him more grace and strength to continue to lead the flock of Christ in the Diocese.
Former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented at the event by a former Minister of Power, Rev. Prof Chinedu Nebo in his remarks, described Bishop Nwokolo as a devout man of God guided by exemplary humility and selfless service through which he has led many youths to God.
In a review of the book,-"Parenting in the Old Testament, Contemporary Patterns, Challenges and Solutions for Nigeria", written by Bishop Nwokolo, the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof Chukwuma Soludo said the family remains the basic unit of character formation. He noted that proper parenting rooted in the word of God ensures better citizenry and by extension, a better society.
Prof Soludo however harped on the need for the Church to be alive to its responsibility of providing the moral standards for parents to adopt, adding that the book poses a functional manual that would ensure that the society gets it right at the family which is the foundation level of child upbringing.
Earlier in a sermon, the Anglican Bishop of Okigwe South pointed out that it is good to always acknowledge God's faithfulness and give thanks, and said in doing so, God is moved to release more blessings.
The Chairman of the occasion and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka said the celebration was unique in that the celebrant has achieved so much at a young age in advancing the cause of evangelism in the Diocese.
